Sydney experienced heavy rain overnight, with 40mm falling in parts of western Sydney.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning with strong winds and hazardous surf across the coast today.
Gusts of up to 90 kilometres an hour are expected across the city and the Illawarra region this morning.
