This morning it was revealed that the NRL wouldn’t have a float in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade this year after they reportedly missed the registration deadline.
According to the Herald, a third party that helped organise the NRL’s participation in the parade since they first took part in 2016, missed the deadline.
They reportedly asked if they could still participate but were told that the float numbers for the parade set to take place in Sydney on February 29 were at capacity.
This would make it the first time in four years that the NRL wouldn’t be in the parade. But it might not be the end of the road for the NRL just yet…
“Due to a third party administrative error the NRL will not have a float in this year’s Mardi Gras,” an NRL spokesman said.
“We are working to have representatives involved with another float participating in this event.”
When Kyle and Jackie O heard about the news this morning, they thought it was a travesty and thought that they might be able to help.
“What did it say, they looking for another float to attach themselves to?” Kyle asked on air this morning.
“Yeah they’re hoping to find someone else where they can sort of get involved a little bit,” our newsreader Brooklyn said.
Each year Kyle and Jackie O and the KIIS FM team march in the parade with their own colourful, sparkly float and so Kyle thought, why not share?
“Well we’ve got quite a substantial sized float and it’s only usually Jackie and I on there and Brooklyn and a few of the other gay staff are dancing around the outside,” Kyle said on air.
“Maybe Jackie and I can hand pick a player to come on the float,” suggested Brooklyn.
“We’ll combine it,” Jackie added.
Kyle, being the selfless guy he is, even offered to give up his own spot on the float to make more room for the NRL.
“I’d be willing to give up my spot on the float and that would fit probably eight NRL players,” Kyle joked.
In fact, Kyle even had his own vision for what the float could be called.
“Jackie will just be laying on a table in the middle of the float surrounded by football players and we’ll call it Mad Monday,” he laughed.
“There’s a gay and lesbian float that will go down in history.”
What do you reckon, should we do a Kyle and Jackie O and NRL combined float for Mardi Gras this year?
Mardi Gras takes place in Sydney on February 29 with some mega stars set to appear including Kesha, Dua Lip and Sam Smith.
