Does the 18th of April ring a well with you? Well, it does for some because it’s National Adoption Day!
Greyhounds As Pets NSW (GAPNSW) is holding its biggest Adoption drive ever, showcasing the largest public show of available greyhounds for adoption with 45 dogs to meet and greet!
The event – which will be taking place at the Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park on Sunday, April 18 – will also include Doggie Market Stalls, demonstrations, and even some fun dog contests where GAP’s greyhounds will be entered in various categories such as Cutest Puppy and Dog, Fancy Dress, Tallest Dog, Smallest Dog, Waggiest Tail, Veterans Aged Over 10 and Best in Show. But, c’mon – they’re all winners in our eyes!
Theatre star and TV personality Todd McKenney will also be making an appearance as the official National Adoption Day Ambassador for the fourth year! McKenney has two pet greyhounds of his own Joey and Nancy Hayes who is named after McKenney’s close friend and one of Australia’s leading musical theatre stars.
“People’s perception of a greyhound and the reality of what a greyhound is actually like as a pet are often two different things. They are such a beautiful breed and often misunderstood,” McKenney said.
“They’re lazy, they’re loving, and they love to run like the wind – it’s amazing to watch. But they are just really relaxed dogs. I love that energy around me, they’re just slow, lazy and gorgeous.
“They really are the best dogs. They are playful, cheeky and fiercely loyal but it is their loving nature that I love the most. I just want to spread the word; I want greyhounds in every household I know of.”
It is important to note that while attendees can still meet the greyhounds and adopt them, matches are based on a well-practiced matching process that prioritises the dog’s needs, its personality and the single, couples or family’s lifestyle.
