It’s happened to all of us, as you’re saying hello to someone and all you’re doing is freaking out about introducing them to your friend as you’ve completely forgotten their name.
What ends up happening is that you don’t introduce them and end up just saying ‘hey mate’ or ‘hey buddy’, amirite?
We get it, so here are some tips on how to keep these embarrassing moments to a minimum.
As soon as you’re introduced to the person, try to use their name at least once in your conversation, even if you just say it back straight away like “it’s a pleasure to meet you, Davo”. This is good on two levels: you’re more likely to remember their name and you make the other person feel good by acknowledging them by name.
If you didn’t hear their name properly or if it’s a bit of a tongue twister, ask to have them spell it out for you.
Kristi Hedges, a contributor for Forbes, says that if you get a business card from the person, study their face while regularly looking at their name on the card. It promotes a better mental picture.
Another good tip is after you get a couple of business cards, excuse yourself and get out a pen. Write a few points about that person on the back of the card, like “Damo works FIFO, has three kids and is trying out for the next season of Shark Tank” or “Sharon has short dark hair and runs a Facebook fan page for The Bachelor”.
Case and point…
If all else fails, there’s no shame to just own up to it. A simple “I’m so sorry but your name has completely slipped my mind” is perfectly acceptable.
…or just call them mate.
