Everyone knows that on Bumble women make the first move, but that doesn’t mean that men don’t have to put in the work.

Ladies, your opening line is crucial as it sets the tone with your match.

But guys, you have to remember that how you respond is just as important to ensure the chat does well enough to lead to a date.

We’ve got the best tips from Lucille McCart, Associate Director, APAC, PR + Comms, to make sure that you can get your conversation on Bumble firing from the very beginning.

Ask questions

Questions are one of the best ways to kick start a conversation – it shows that you have taken an interest in the person, and in most cases will generate a good back and forth, as your match will generally fire the question back at you.

In fact, questions are so important that we recently introduced a new feature called Question Game to make this type of exchange even easier – you can select a question to send to your match, or create your own, but you have to provide your own answer as well. It’s only once you’ve both responded that the answers are revealed. You can even use this as your first move, which is a great way to get into a good chat right away.

Be confident

The first couple of times that you make the first move, you might freak out and spend hours trying to work out the best thing to say, or worry that you’ll come off as too strong or not be funny. But make the first move with confidence and give it a go.

The less pressure you put on yourself the faster you’ll find your groove.  I think it is always helpful to remember that every guy that is on Bumble signed up knowing that women have to make the first move – so why be shy?

Make it personal

Being funny is always great, but if that doesn’t come naturally to you or you feel really stuck, anything that is personal to your match works well. For example, if they have said in their bio that they are a huge fan of a TV show that you also love, talk about that.

If they have pictures of them on a hike and you love hiking, talk about that. Find where you think you might have common ground and start there (guys, this is a hint to make sure that you have an amazing profile!). And remember to use their name when you talk to them!

Be positive

When it comes to your first few interactions with a new match, keep it positive. Don’t talk too much about what you’re NOT looking for, or focus on what might have been missing or gone wrong in previous relationships.

You don’t want to lead with the negatives, and keeping an upbeat tone is more likely to lead to a fun chat that leaves both you and your match wanting more.

If after all of this you still want some inspiration for your opening lines, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most popular Bumble openers below, based on different dating styles.
