If you’re looking to lose a very extra kilograms this summer, changing to diet drinks might not be the answer.

According to scientists, drinks like Diet Coke and Sprite Zero actually increase hunger and your desire to eat.

A study found that volunteers who were given the artificially sweetened drinks didn’t lose any weight because they simply made up the difference in calories at lunch time.

The lead author, who said he was surprised by the findings, found ‘the energy saved from replacing sugar with non-nutritive sweetener was fully compensated for at subsequent meals in the current study, hence no difference in total daily energy intake was found between the four treatments.’

It’s been fireworks ever since our first sip of #DietCoke. #ShareaCoke

Interestingly, participants given diet drinks ate up to 80 more calories at lunchtime than those given the full strength version.

Participants described being hungrier after drinking the diet drinks.
