Grey hair is the nightmare awaiting all women to signal that the dreaded day has come. You’re old.

Well, not OLD old, but definitely older. You’ve reached that stage where your boobs and your face no longer sit where they used to and you’ll have to start colouring your hair not because you fancy a change in colour, but because you’re desperate to cover the greys!

But what about the massive temptation to just pluck them out and pretend they never existed?

The only thing stopping us doing this every time we spot one of the little monsters in the mirror is the old wives tale that goes a little something like this.

“If you pull out a grey hair TEN MORE will take it’s place.”

So we went straight to science for the answer.

Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips is a trichologist and she is calling bulls**t on this myth!

“We cannot add to the number of follicles we have, and it will not cause the surrounding hairs to turn grey. The only time more than one hair grows from one spot is when, for some undetermined reason, there is a merging of two hair follicles,” she said

“If there is a grey hair that you must get rid of, very carefully cut it! Plucking can traumatise the follicle, and repeated trauma to any follicle is not ideal.”
