The warning has rolled around again, in an attempt to deter sweet tooths from eating or tasting cookie dough.

Eating unbaked products that are intended to be cooked, such as dough or batter, can make you really sick but that hasn’t stopped people in the past.

Raw Dough Can Contain Bacteria That Cause Disease

Flour hasn’t been treated to kill germs like Escherichia coli (E. coli). This is why you should never taste or eat raw dough or batter—whether made from recalled flour or any other flour. In 2016, an outbreak of E. coli infections linked to raw flour made 63 people sick. Accompanying the fear of salmonella from raw eggs, its safe to say don’t eat cookie dough intended for baking.

BUT. Dough fans, we got you.

Raw cookie dough was named 2017’s biggest Instagram trend.

Cookie dough that is intended to be eaten raw has become so popular that there are entire parlours dedicated to it. The raw cookie dough uses heat-treated flour, combinea with pasteurised eggs so it is safe to eat.

In Melbourne, there’s is Cookie Doh Co. and Cookie Dough Dream while Sydney’s Joe Dough peddles it as part of a broader sweet line-up.
