The ‘Imaginary Meal’ Pill
No, you haven’t just found yourself in a Willy Wonka movie, where you can get yourself an entire three-course meal in a stick of chewing gum.
This ‘imaginery meal’ pill is designed to trick your body into thinking it has consumed a large meal, and the equivalent calories, so that you no longer feel hungry.
According to a report on news.com.au, early tests of the pill on mice effectively halted weight gain, lowered cholesterol and controlled blood sugar while reducing levels of unhealthy white fat.
Leading US scientist Dr. Ronald Evansm who is also the director of the Salk Institute’s Gene Expression Laboratory in La Jolla, California describes the pill like this: “This pill is like an imaginary meal. It sends out the same signals that normally happen when you eat a lot of food, so the body starts clearing out space to store it. But there are no calories and no change in appetite.”
So how does it work? At the start of the meal, a protein called FXR prepares the body for an influx of food, which not only triggers bile acid release but also alters blood sugar levels and begins the burning of fats.
The difference between this pill and others like it is reportedly that it onlu functions in the stomach, meaning that it doesn’t dissolve into the blood like some appetite supressants or caffeine-based diet pills.
The Lemon Detox Diet
Any diet where you’re starving your body of essential nutrients can’t be beneficial for your body, at least not in the long term. This program does have its merits, as it cleanses your system and is said to reduce stress. Just try it as a detox, not a long term diet that works in place of food.
The Cabbage Soup Diet
The cabbage soup diet works mostly by cutting your daily calories to near-starvation levels. Effective in the very short term perhaps, but definitely not a healthy option in the long term.
Reducta Chewing Gum
This gum reportedly works to supress your appetite, making you want less food than normal. It also is said to contain no calories and burns calories ‘as you chew’.
The No Carb Diet
Besides being totally cruel, the no carb diet is a weight loss option that has always been debated. While cutting down on carbs can see you lose some weight, it can also see you lose energy, as carbohydrates are one of the main fuel sources for your body.
