Who doesn’t love wombats? They’re one of Australia’s most iconic (and adorable) marsupials.
What about wine? Well, that’s a given.
What if we told you that you could save wombats by drinking some plonk? What a dream!
Little Giant Wine has partnered with wildlife rescue organisation WIRES to support the work it does in rescuing and treating wombats who are facing increasing threats from habitat loss, vehicle collisions and disease.
Funnily enough, the wine’s birthplace is South Australia, which is where the southern hairy-nosed wombat reigns!
The funding received from the sales of Little Giant goes towards helping WIRES who help thousands of wombats who have suffered injuries, many of which if left untreated can cause a slow and painful death.
One of the wombats that has been helped by the contributions of Little Giant Wine is Ash.
Ash was rescued by a young girl who did a pouch check on a wombat that had died after someone had hit his mum with their car. The joey was taken to WIRES covered in Ash, hence the name!
Weighing in at just 1.080kg, he was taught how to drink from a bottle, and even teamed up with two other little orphans.
Now a fully grown adult, the adorable wombat – and his adoptive siblings – feed on two bottles a day, and enjoy munching on native grasses and other supplements to keep healthy.
Ash’s incredible recovery wouldn’t have happened without the support of Little Giant Wines whose contribution has helped him and many others just like him to grow into healthy adults and return to the wild with the best chance of surviving and rebuilding the wombat populations.
Little Giant Barossa Shiraz is available for $22 from all major liquor retailers across the country. The range also includes Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Grenache.
