When the ‘King of the Jungle’, Luke Toki, was voted out of this season of Survivor Australia, just one episode before the finale, social media practically exploded.
He truly was a fan favourite to win and people couldn’t believe that he had just missed out on his second go at becoming the sole Survivor.
But a lot of the comments that were made weren’t commiserating the loss of Luke. They were aimed at fellow Survivor cast member Pia Miranda as her vote was the one that decided Luke’s fate.
Me right now #SurvivorAU I get why Pia did it & I hope she wins. But as a mum of 2 autistic boys. That was hard to watch Luke go out knowing what that money would mean for his kids & family. pic.twitter.com/KfOrLHq0iY

She chose to vote Luke out, knowing that if she kept him in, he would likely go on to win the entire thing.
Instead, Pia went on to actually win the competition during last night’s final episode as the jury unanimously voted for her to take out the title of sole Survivor.
But this doesn’t mean that the backlash that she received on social media didn’t affect her.
Pia joined the Kyle and Jackie O show this morning when she opened up about all of the comments and explained why she thinks people hit out so hard at her.
“A lot of people have been talking about the Luke episode where you voted him out and we spoke to Luke yesterday, and he said that he would’ve done the same thing,” Jackie told Pia this morning.
“You have to do that in this game. You can’t just hand half a million dollars over to someone else when it can be yours.
“So do you get a little frustrated when you see people having a go at you for not giving it to Luke?”
“Yeah you know, Luke and I understand the game and a lot of us, we sacrifice a lot to be there and you make a promise to your family that if you’re going to do that you’re going to play to win,” Pia told us. “And Luke and I are really close and I think voting him out was so tough for me.
“But there were three of us that voted him out. But for me it was tough because emotionally I just, he was my friend and I didn’t want to send him home.”
“And so I think me getting all the backlash was sort of a bit of a shock and pretty full on,” Pia continued. “But maybe it’s because a lot of people have fallen in love with Survivor for the first time because of this season and they don’t really know how it works.”
“Yeah you need to be a bit of a super fan to appreciate that sort of game play,” Jackie added.
Of course, it was certainly a brilliant move; Otherwise Pia might not be sitting here with the winning title right now!
