NRL fans all around Australia will be overjoyed today that the season is finally starting back up again after it was shut down earlier in the year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
And it certainly will be a season like no other with thinks looking and sounding very different to the usual hustle and bustle of a game.
Former Rabbitohs player Sam Burgess joined the Kyle and Jackie O show this morning to chat about the NRL’s return ahead of the Parramatta Eels taking on the Brisbane Broncos up in Queensland tonight.
He told us that it’s incredibly exciting to see the game coming back and setting a precedent for other sporting industries around the world.
“Globally I’d say we’re up there with the first few… The whole competition I think it’s pretty spectacular what Peter V’lands has been able to accomplish,” Sam said.
“So it’s pretty exciting! I think it gives everyone a bit of excitement that there’s a game of football on tonight.”
One of the biggest changes that we’ll see at NRL games is the fact that there will be no crowds in the stadium, meaning that things are likely to be eerily quiet.
Kyle wondered whether they should dub in fake crowd noises like the candid laughter they use on TV sitcoms, but Sam said it’s actually quite interesting to see a game without the noise.
“No crowd, that will be a problem, do you reckon?” Kyle wondered. “For the players and people watching? They want to hear the crowd.”
“Is it better they just dumb in the noise even thought there’s no crowd there?” Jackie asked.
“That would be a good idea actually,” Sam admitted. “But listen, we played round two without a crowd and I was sat in the stand up in Brisbane and it was a strange atmosphere but it’s also so intense as well.
“You could hear the players talking, you could hear the collisions. It was actually cool being there live. I’m not sure what it’s going to look like and feel like as a player.”
But even though the games might look a bit weird for the moment, Sam said that we should just be thankful that we’ve finally “got something back”.
Will you be tuning into the game tonight? The Eels take on the Broncos with kick off at 7:45pm!
