You may have noticed something weird at The Games, every single time somebody wins a medal.

Once the athletes are on the podium, they pose for the world’s press and then bite their medal.

While it may seem a bit weird for us back at home, it is a trend that spans the world, all sports and several Games now.

If you have thought it is because the athletes are testing whether the medals are made of actual gold, well that would be wrong. The Gold medals are 93% silver, 6% copper and 1% gold.

The actual reason as to why they bite their medals? It’s just because the photographers want more interesting pictures to sell than a champion smiling and holding the medal, according to Mental Floss.

It can have a little repercussion, though, with German athlete David Moeller chipping his tooth at the 2010 Winter Games saying ‘’”The photographers wanted us to bite into our medals at the presentation ceremony. And a corner of my front tooth broke off.

“It wasn’t too bad, and it didn’t hurt. But it is annoying when you can’t smile as you normally do. And because I want to have beautiful pictures and happy memories of my Olympic Games, I went to the dentist to get it repaired.”

So careful biting, everyone.
