Sci-fi buffs rejoice – The X-Files is on its way back to TV screens.

Fox has announced that the cult television show will be back for a six-episode “event series”, with original stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning to their roles as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

Creator Chris Carter will also return as executive producer and writer.

Producers said in a statement, “The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture.”

The show ran over nine seasons from 1993 to 2002.
