More than three decades on from the original film, Tom Cruise’s character Maverick still has the need – the need for speed!
The Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, was announced over a year ago now and FINALLY we have our first trailer!
The teaser was released after the leading man Tom Cruise made a surprise appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, where he introduced the first look at the film.
And can we just say, it’s certainly action packed!
Cruise returns as his infamous character Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, who we find out at the beginning of the trailer, hasn’t been able to be promoted above the rank of Captain after all of these years.
“30 plus years of service, combat medals, citations, only man to shoot down three enemy planes in the last 40 years, yet you can’t get a promotion, you won’t retire and despite your best efforts you refuse to die,” says Ed Harris’ character amongst flash shots of Maverick in his fighter jet.
“You should be at least two star admiral by now. Yet here you are, captain. Why is that?”
“It’s one of life’s mysteries sir,” Maverick replies.
Miles Teller joins the cast of the sequel to play Goose’s son, Bradley Bradshaw, who is Maverick’s protege.
Val Kilmer also returns as ‘Iceman’ while Jennifer Connelly joins the cast as Maverick’s apparent love interest.
While previously speaking about the film, Cruise said that the sequel would be just as action packed as the first film.
“We’re going to have the same tone as we had in the first movie. Stylistically, it’s going to be the same. We’re going to have the same score,” he said to Access Hollywood. “we’re going to have big fast machines. It’s going to be a competition tim like the first one.”
And while the trailer doesn’t give away too much about the actually plot, it certainly does play true to this statement!
