A year ago Nick ‘The Honey Badger’ Cummins was known for his larrikin style interviews and skills on the Rugby field. But today he is known by people far and wide as the only Bachelor in history to pick none of the girls in the finale.

Just a few months ago now, Nick shocked fans of The Bachelor franchise after he stood in front of his two finalists, Brittany Hockley and Sophie Tieman, only to tell them that he didn’t want to be with either of them, saying that he couldn’t commit wholeheartedly.

While the badge has received a ton of backlash since his decision, his most recent interview might have just given us a bit of further insight into what was going through his mind at the time of his controversial decision.

Speaking on an ABC Radio Nation podcast yesterday, Nick Cummins revealed a major insider secret of the reality TV show, saying that every Bachelor and Bachelorette is forced to sign a ‘love’ contract.

The contract states that Bachelors and Bachelorettes will remain with their chosen person for a minimum of three months following the airing of the show.

During the podcast, Nick explained that he couldn’t understand how the show expected their stars to find love every single time, and said that he wasn’t willing to choose someone just to lie about a relationship for the sake of the show.

“I was actually disappointed that people are so brainwashed, you’re not going to get your fairytale ending every time,” he said.

“And what’s more important, me just saying ‘yes’ and going through the motions and dragging some girl through all this mead about how we’re in love and then three months down the track after the contract’s over, um, we’re allowed to break up.

“I’m not going to drag them through that rubbish and break her heart. Bugger than.”

The rumours of a love contract first arose during Sophie Monk’s season of the Bachelorette after people began to speculate that her and winner Stu Laundy weren’t really together after the show.

A few months after the show aired, Sophie and Stu ended up breaking up. So this contract might not be that much of a revelation but it is of course the first time that it’s been officially confirmed by a contestant.

And TBH we actually kind of understand Nick’s decision a lot more now and might even say that he did the right thing!

After all, Brit and Soph are clearly happy with where they’re at now that the media circus surrounding their finale has died down. Whereas if Nick had picked one of them they’d only just be entering the media storm surrounding their break up.

Of course this now has us wondering, with all of the rumours surfacing that our most recent Bachelorette Ali Oetjen and her winner Taite Radley are faking their relationship, are they only staying together because of a contract?
