Ahead of one of the most significant dates on the Australian calendar, one Sydney council has been forced into making an embarrassing apology after a typo was discovered on banners commemorating ANZAC Day.
Around thirty large flags showing pictures of servicemen and women were mistakenly erected with a glaring spelling mistake around the streets of Sydney’s inner-west.
Locals noticed that the traditional phrase ‘Lest we forget’ actually appeared as ‘Lest we forgot’

City of Canada Bay council claim that the error was due to a miscommunication between their staff and the printing company who made the banners.
All of the banners have now been removed after the council was made aware of the error.
@CanadaBay @RSL_National Dear Hon Mayor, can you please assist. Banners of CB that is spotted for ANZAC Day says: Lest we forgot – is that correct? pic.twitter.com/9dWNSA0MMd

The council’s general manager Peter Gainsford said:
‘I have today been made aware of banners that have been erected in our area containing an extremely unfortunate and disrespectful error.’
‘I am extremely disappointed and accept full responsibility,’ Mr Gainsford said.
‘I have spoken to representatives of the Concord, Five Dock and Drummoyne RSL branches…and unreservedly apologised for any offence.’
