We know that everyone went a little crazy with indoor plants during the depths of the coronavirus lockdowns.
But Barcelona’s Liceu opera has just taken the houseplant obsession to the next level.
The famous opera theatre The Gran Teatre del Liceu has been closed since March when COVID-19 lockdowns first struck Spain.
With restrictions easing across the continent, the opera staged its first performance on Monday.
And while the opera will eventually welcome people back into its 2,292 seat venue, its return performance was played to an audience of plants.
A string quartet serenaded the “audience” with Giacomo Puccini’s Crisantemi, although the audience’s reception did leaf a little to be desired.
The plants came from local nurseries and will now be donated to healthcare workers in Barcelona as a thank you for their work throughout the pandemic.
