An embrace between surfer Mick Fanning and fellow Aussie Julian Wilson best illustrates the emotion of yesterday’s near fatal shark attack.

And it seems Fanning himself was more than moved by the courage and selflessness on display from Wilson in the height of events.

The surfing legend has posted a message of gratitude and thankfulness to Wilson on Instagram this morning, after the 26-year-old came to Fanning’s rescue, swimming towards the shark attack instead of standing by and witnessing the terror.

Wilson was obviously moved by the situation over the weekend, breaking down in tears during an interview afterwards.

The heartfelt message from Fanning, accompanied by a black and white version of their embrace, read as follows.

“So thankful to be able to have this hug with @julian_wilson this man came to my aid like a warrior!!” he said.

“It was by far the scariest thing I have ever been through and am still rattled.

“In our sport we always think about sharks and know we are in their domain.”

He continued to share his thanks with event organisers, safety crew that eventually reached him and got him to safety and his fellow competitors and fans for their support throughout the harrowing ordeal.

“Many thanks to all the people that have reached out and sent their wishes,” he said.

“Jbay is an incredible place and I will go back one day.

“Thanks to the @wsl announcers and water patrol for being on top of us and the care they showed us and to all my friends on tour that were by my side. Love you all.”

In true surfer’s form, he is holding no animosity torwards the shark or the venue.

But we think it may take awhile before he tests the waters again… and we don’t blame him!
