Luke Perry’s daughter, Sophie, has named a school after her late father since he died almost two months ago.
The 18-year-old’s humanitarianism and fundraising efforts paid off this week when she unveiled the new school she helped open in Malawi on Instagram Monday (April 29). Sophie, who financed the project with the GoFundMe campaign she started herself, dedicated the institution to the 90210 and Riverdale actor, who passed away on March 4 days after suffering a massive stroke.
“Thank you to everybody who donated to help with our projects!” Sophie captioned a photo of herself posing alongside her team in front of the newly-built institution. “Our first school is finished and I can’t tell you how proud and excited I am to see it open on Wednesday. Thank you to my amazing partner Ruben for everything. Especially for fighting to name the school after my dad.”
The teenager, who had been working on educational efforts in Malawi when her father was rushed to the hospital, was able to return back to Los Angeles to join her family at her father’s side during the final moments of his life.
“I cannot individually respond to the hundreds of beautiful and heartfelt messages, but I see them, and appreciate you all for sending positivity to my family and I,” Sophie wrote at the time. “I’m not really sure what to say or do in this situation … So bare [sic] with me and know that I am grateful for all the love. Just, being grateful quietly.”
Since Luke’s unfortunate passing, Sophie has been keeping her father’s memory alive on her Instagram, most recently with one father-daughter moment posted five weeks ago along with the message: “Miss him a little extra today.”
