Paul Gallen and Cronulla Sharks fans would have received a shock this morning while listening to Kyle and Jackie O after the NRL legend made an exclusive announcement.
Paul joined Kyle and Jackie O during Beau Ryan’s sports segment this morning ahead of his record breaking game this weekend.
Beau explained to the guys that Paul Gallen was currently sitting on 327 games and was biting on the heels of fellow Cronulla player Andrew Ettingshausen’s record of 328 games.
In a moment of sarcasm, Beau joked that Gallen should retire after this weekend so that he matches the record instead of smashing it. But as Gallen joined us on the phone, Beau didn’t realise that this statement might have more truth to it than he first thought.
Gallen exclusively revealed to us that 2019 will be his last year in Rugby League and confirmed that he will be retiring at the end of the year.
“I’m going to retire from Rugby League this year,” he said. “Yeah definitely retiring at the end of the year, without a doubt Kyle.
“I’ve really enjoyed where I’ve been and what I’ve done but I’m ready to retire. I’ve had enough of the rollercoaster to be honest.”
As for what Gallen will do after retiring from the game, he revealed that he will continue to work with Channel Nine in a media role.
“I’ll do a little bit in the media with Channel Nine, so really enjoy that, the commentary and the talk shows,” he revealed.
“I’ll stay involved in the game whether it be with Cronulla or a club with a little bit of a mentoring role.”
It’ll definitely be sad to see another legend go!
