If you’re on TikTok then you’ve definitely seen or heard the ‘show your culture’ trend where people dance to a gentle beat showing off their cultural garbs.
The original track was make by a New Zealand teen, Joshua Nanai (Jawsh 685 on Youtube) which you can listen to here:
The track has EXPLODED on TikTok, according to Variety people are making 750,000 TikToks to this beat a day!!
Nanai is of Samoan and Cook Island heritage and this original instrumental is called a ‘siren jam’ unique to the Polynesian trend of creating sounds specifically to play through ‘siren’ speakers in cars and on bikes.
JASON DERULO STRAIGHT UP loved this beat on TikTok and just TOOK it to remix into his own song- listen to it here.
He doesn’t even change it, he just uses the part of the song as his hook and people got MAD.
After receiving a tsunami of hate for ‘stealing’ the song from a teenager, he re-uploaded the track with proper accreditation.
“Had fun remixing @jawsh_685 siren beat #SavageLove 🔥🔥🔥 summer vibes,”
All’s well that ends well. Jason credited him and Joshua Nanai has gotten signed to a label and made his track free to use!
But compensation hasn’t been agreed on yet…Should Nanai get some money for his part of the track?
