Richard Reid has been a presence on our television screens as an entertainment reporter for years and has always appeared to be a bright, bubbly and happy guy. But behind closed doors things were apparently a different story.
During an episode of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! last night, Richard made a shocking confession about his long-running struggle with alcohol addiction.
In an emotional conversation with fellow contestant Justin Lacko, Reid detailed multiple benders that had resulted from his addiction and revealed the moment that made him want to quit drinking altogether.
“I had several incidents back-to-back that I am not proud of,” Richard revealed, before detailing one particular time he got completely wasted at the Logies in Sydney.
“In Sydney, I was really hung over after the Logies, and I wanted to take a quick nap, because I had a business meeting,” he continued.
“I took a sleeping pill, I fell into a trance, and then raided the mini bar, was like blacked out…went to the business meeting right? Grabbed a journalist’s breasts, was all over Napoleon Perdis and then they tell me I tried to urinate on a pot plant.”
Reid continued to recall the moment to a completely shocked Lacko, saying that he didn’t remember doing any of it.
“It was a contract signing,” he continued. “I expected them to say no way, they signed me to do this column, I had to write their column every week for a year and every time I had to do it I was reminded of the humiliation that I felt.”
Richard explained that this moment was a turning point for him and since then he hasn’t touched any alcohol and has remained sober for seven years.
“I was just so ashamed, because I’m not like that. I was just like, you know what, enough is enough. I was like, ‘I don’t want to be that person’, from then I was like, ‘I’m done’,” he continued.
“It’s been really hard, it’s really hard what people say, ‘You’re not fun’. I’m fun, I’m just not drunk. I’ve kept my career, I’m trying to keep my looks, you know. It just works for me.”
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! continues at 7:30pm on Network Ten.
