On January 26th 2020, Matt Mauser’s wife (basketball coach Christina Mauser) was killed in a helicopter crash alongside Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and six others.

18 months later, Matt decided it was time to show off his vocal chops on America’s Got Talent.

In a pre-taped interview, the 51-year-old described the life he shared with Christina, noting that they met in 2004 after she saw him performing in a bar. They got married and had three children together.

Christina coached basketball with Bryant at Mamba Sports Academy.

“She was just this very humble, powerful, beautiful human being,” he said.

“When she left that day, she kissed me and she said, I love you.’ That was the last thing my wife ever said to me.”

While Mauser admits that losing his wife has been absolutely devastating, he is trying to focus on their children.

“You start to say, ‘Alright. She would want me to carry on. She would want our kids to have happy lives,'” he said.

The father of three performed Phil Collins’ ‘Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)’ and, understandably, received a standing ovation from the judges and audience.
