Doctors have recommended string as a good way to measure whether or not you’re overweight.

Forget the traditional BMI measure – measuring your height with a piece of string, folding it in half and then seeing if you can easily get it around your waist is the new recommended method.

The trouble with the BMI test – which divides a person’s weight by their height in metres squared – is that it doesn’t take things like large muscle mass and heavy bone structure into account, and also underestimates the risk to people who carry large amounts of fat around their middle.

A recent study by Oxford Brookes University surveyed the health of almost 3000 16-year-olds, found that a third of those tested would have been overweight if tested by the string method but were classified as normal by BMI.
