The internet exploded when Mark Zuckerberg, inventor of Facebook, posted a photo of himself at his desk with what looked like tape covering the webcam.

And now the head of the FBI has admitted that he does the same thing – and is urging other computer users to follow suit.

“There’s some sensible things you should be doing, and that’s one of them,” director James Comey said at a conference on Wednesday.

“You go into any government office and we all have the little camera things that sit on top of the screen. They all have a little lid that closes down on them.

“You do that so that people who don’t have authority don’t look at you. I think that’s a good thing.”

Taping over your webcam when not in use, however, doesn’t prevent would-be hackers from gaining access to your computer microphone, although it was noted that Zuckerberg had also taped over that, too.

But Comey believes that the addition of a strip of something is worth a go.

“I hope people lock their cars,” he continued. “Lock your doors at night… if you have an alarm system, you should use it.

“It’s not crazy that the FBI director cares about personal security as well.

“So I think people ought to take responsibility for their own safety and security.”
