“From time to time we have staff that do not care about the cleanliness of our place… Lucky they don’t last very long!”

No matter how important anyone thinks they may be at KIIS1065, nothing truly makes the place fall apart like Groundskeeper Lou taking leave.

Easily everyone’s favourite person in the building, our legendary Lou has now been the backbone of the station for 35 years (long before KIIS was even called KIIS!)

To celebrate the milestone, Lou has reflected on the highs & lows of his time in the gig.

How did you first get the job?
I started as a cleaning contractor in 1980. From 1984 it’s been 35 wonderful years as full time. My work duties have been almost the same to this day: general maintenance.

What time do you arrive in the morning & leave at the end of the day?
I arrive at 5AM and leave at 1.59PM. Seriously, with the variety of tasks in radio, we need 100 hours in a day!

Have you ever disliked anyone that’s worked here?
I’ve had the pleasure of working with many great announcers. They are all humans and I always work on the positive side. I do not dislike anyone and hope it’s the same the other way around!

What’s something memorable that’s happened over the years?
Many people have suggested I should write a book on my years working in radio… The saddest day was in July 1984 when we lost 3 of our staff in a car crash while visiting our then station in Gympie, Queensland.

What’s the weirdest/worst task you’ve been asked to do?
In the 80’s and 90’s, the radio industry ratings party used to start at 10AM and finish when the bar was empty. I remember coming in a few times the following day to clean the place to scenes that looked like those movies where cakes are thrown left right and centre.

What’s your favourite part of your job?
I still enjoy working and supporting a great team of professionals.

Is there anything people do in the office that makes you mad?
From time to time we have staff that do not care about the cleanliness of our place… Lucky they don’t last very long!

Any plans to leave your job soon?
Hope to stay around a few more years… And then go fishing.
