A new book by the late children’s author Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr Seuss, will be released following the discovery of an unpublished manuscript.

What Pet Should I Get? is an illustrated, rhyming children’s book in the tradition of the surreally wry Dr Seuss classics like The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Horton Hears a Who.

The manuscript was discovered by Geisel’s widow two years ago, and appears to have been written in the late 1950s or early 1960s, according to The New York Times.

Publisher Random House has called the discovery “the literary equivalent of buried treasure.”

It will be the first book by the German-American author published since his death in 1991.

The 44 classic children’s books he wrote and illustrated under the name Dr Seuss have sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide in thirty languages.

In his lifetime, Geisel won numerous accolades including eight honourary doctorates and the Pulitzer Prize.

What Pet Should I Get? goes on sale on July 28.
