Disney is bringing a Broadway classic from the stage to the big screen with news that hit musical ‘Hamilton’ will be transformed into a film.

In a deal reportedly worth around $75m, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical will be broadcast in cinemas around the world thanks to Disney.

The broadcast will be of a performance that was recorded in 2016 over the space of three full performances at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York.

The original cast will be featured on the big screen as this was filmed during the original run of the musical, including Miranda himself as Hamilton, David Diggs, Lesie Odom Jr and Phillippa Soo.

“You all have that friend that is like, ‘I saw it with the original cast’,” Miranda explained to Variety about choosing to broadcast the 2016 performances.

“We’re stealing that brag from everyone because you’re all going to see it with the original cast.”

Hamilton the musical first debuted in 2015 and has won numerous awards over it’s run.

The story is told from the perspective of politician Alexander Hamilton during the American revolution as the US banking system is invented.

The Disney film version is set to be released in cinemas on 15 October 2021.
