2020 will mark an end of an era for Channel Seven’s Sydney Weekender after the network’s CEO James Warburton announced the axing of several of the station’s state-based travel shows.
This means Seven will stop producing brand-funded local window programs which include Sydney Weekender, SA Weekender, The Great Weekend in Melbourne, and Queensland Weekender, The Great Day Out and Creek to Coast in Brisbane.
While no new episodes will be made, some shows have already produced episodes for the new year, which will air in early 2020.
The decision comes as Warburton takes tighter control of the budget at the network by investing more heavily in primetime content.
Seven West Media Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, James Warburton, said: “The programs that are not continuing have all made a valuable contribution to Seven, particularly Sydney Weekender which has been a Sydney weekend institution for 25 years.
“However, we will continue to make decisions that support our content led growth strategy and focus resources where they will make the most impact.”
