Caitlyn Jenner opened up while chatting to the Kyle and Jackie O this morning about what it was really like to be such a public figure while going through her transition.

She told us that she was absolutely terrified that the paparazzi were going to expose her as being transgender before she had a chance to come out herself after one rather terrifying experience.

Caitlyn was telling us about her home in Malibu and how it’s located on a cliff top, when she explained that one particular pap managed to photograph her inside her house before she came out.

“When I was going through my transition and I had the media all over me, oh they were horrible, somebody climbed up a mountain a mile or two away with a telephoto lens and got a picture,” Caitlyn told us this morning.

“Of what?” Kyle asked.

“Just me in a cute little outfit,” Caitlyn continued.

“Was this before you went public with it?” Jackie asked.

“Yes. Just when all the rumours were going around.”

Caitlyn told us that she actually had to go to some pretty drastic measures to keep the paps out of her private space after that.

“I’m living there by myself so I figured, ‘Okay, I gotta put walls up’. So I put six foot walls up around the outside so I could at least go out to the pool and I don’t have to worry about some guy on another hill taking a picture.”

“As soon as it got out,” she continued to say about the photo, “I had my lawyers jump all over them and they took it all down. But that forced me to build walls around my house.”

Jenner explained that while it seems drastic, she did what she had to do in order to be comfortable in her own home. She didn’t want her transition to be something exposed in a gossip column but something that came out when she was ready.

“All I was trying to do was just live my life,” she explained.

That day came when Caitlyn’s face popped up on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine.

“Then the day when Vanity Fair came out, the walls came down,” Caitlyn said. “It was great, I said, ‘Okay, we’re done. Take the walls down I really don’t care’. And slowly the media started just leaving and going onto the next story.”

Caitlyn’s bravery during her transition really is something to be admired. In fact, one of our Sydney listeners actually called up this morning to thank Caitlyn for the path that she created for the whole transgender community.
