A star is born *literally* in the latest movie sweeping the box office: a four legged Labradoodle by the name of Charlie.

bradley cooper, the Director and star of ‘a Star of Born’, handpicked his own rescue dog, Charlie, to play the cute puppy his character jackson maine has with Ally (Lady Gaga).

Despite not having any acting experience under his belt, Cooper has reassured viewers that “there was no nepotism” involved.

“There was no nepotism – I wanted this relationship with the dog,” Cooper explained to PEOPLE at the movie’s Los Angeles premiere. “[Jackson and Ally] don’t have a child together but they have a dog together, and I wanted it to be part of their story. I love dogs.”

A self-confessed dog lover, Bradley Cooper previously had two rescue dogs who he referred to as “his kids.” However, Charlie holds a special place in his heart as he’s named after Cooper’s late father.

“That meant a lot for him to be in the film,” the 43-year-old added.

The actor/director’s father, Charles J. Cooper, died in 2011 after losing his battle with lung cancer. He attributes the loss as part of what made it possible to tackle his difficult role in A Star Is Born.

The actor can add even more to his repertoire after being awarded animal rights organisation PETA’s inaugural ‘compassion in film award’ for casting Charlie.

“Bradley Cooper’s happy, adorable, and much-loved dog steals the spotlight – and viewers’ hearts – in this film because it’s clear that he loved being with his real-life ‘dad,'” said PETA senior vice president Lisa Lange. “PETA has witnessed so much abuse and neglect of dogs, both on and off set, that we’re hoping Cooper’s kind decision sets a precedent for all of Hollywood to follow.”

Hopefully we see more of this adorable Labradoodle in the future. Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards, maybe?
