An Australian woman from Melbourne has died after falling down a cliff in Japan.
Japanese media have reported that the woman had been walking the Kumano Kodo in Wakayama prefecture on May 10 with a friend when she fell almost 40 metres.
A fire brigade was called to the scene at about midday and the woman was found unconscious below the cliff. She was taken to hospital but died four hours later.
The identity of the woman has been withheld at the request of her family, but she was in her 60s and had only just retired earlier this year.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are currently assisting the woman’s family.
“Due to privacy reasons we are unable to provide further information,” a spokesperson said.
The Kumano Kodo is a series of pilgrimage trails and is a UNESCO heritage site. While it has been in use for over 1000 years, originally designed to help people move between three shrines, but some parts of the trails are considered dangerous.
