According to prosecutors, the Germanwings Airbus A320 crash was no accident.

Marseille Prosecutor Brice Robin says that co-pilot Andreas Lubitz, 28, deliberately crashed the plane, locking the captain out of the cockpit and steering the plane to its downfall.

The conclusion was reached after listening to audio from the plane’s black box, which proved that Lubitz was alone at the controls and refused to open the door of the cockpit to the pilot, instead bringing the plane to its descent and killing all 150 on board, including himself.

“The intention was to destroy the plane,” Mr Robin said. “Death was instant.”

The screams of passengers were heard at the end of the audio recordings, and the co-pilot spoke “not a single word” during the last 10 minutes before the crash.

Lubitz was a German citizen without any known links to terrorism or extremists.

Germanwings has tweeted in response to the shocking revelations.

Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spoor said during a press conference, “It leaves us absolutely speechless… What happened here is a tragic individual event. We are trying to deal with an enigma.”
