What we think it means: “I’m praying so hard.”

What it actually means: Person With Folded Hands. Two hands placed firmly together, used to represent praying hands, and also meaning sorry in Japanese. This emoji is sometimes used as a high-five emoji, due to the similarity in appearance to a high-five gesture.

#2: X-rated eyes

What we think it means: “Eek, I just saw something X-rated.”

What it actually means: Dizzy Face. Face with crosses as eyes that looks like xx. Raised eyebrows and a wide-open mouth.

#3: Person bowing 

What we think it means: “Push-ups suck.”

What it actually means: Person Bowing Deeply. A person bowing deeply, with great deference and respect for the person the bow is directed toward. Known as dogeza in Japan, bowing is most prominent in Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, or China as a form of respect, decency, and manners.

#4: Hallelujah symbol

What we think it means: “Hallelujah!”

What it actually means: It’s meant to express joy about some success or positive event.

Also known as: “yes”, “life is GOOD’.

#5: Sassy woman pushing her hair

What we think it means: “I don’t even know what to think anymore.”

What it actually means: Information Desk Person. A girl holding out her hand, working at a reception desk or information desk. It is unclear why she has her hand in the air like a waitress carrying an invisible tray of drinks.

What we think it means: friends having fun, best friends

What it actually means: It’s supposed to be a representation of the Bunny Girl, a subservient symbol in Japan that’s associated with sex appeal.

Also known as: dancing girls emoji, tap dance, ballet emoji, dance emoji

#7: Ballerina/I don’t get it symbol

What we think it means: “I don’t get it!”

What it actually means: Face With OK Gesture. A person with arms above her head, making an ‘OK’ sign (circle) with the whole body. Also looks a bit like a ballerina, or putting hands on head.

#8: ‘Crying so hard I’m snotty’ symbol

What we think it means: “I’m crying so much, I have snot coming out of my nose.”

What it actually means: Sleepy Face. Not to be confused with Sleeping Face Emoji, this Sleepy Face Emoji is drooling out one side of its mouth. Presumably in a deep sleep.
