We’ve all been there: stressed out, can’t seem to get organised, not accomplishing much in our workday.

Harvard Business Review has shared a few simple tips to help you make the most of your day, all in under 18-minutes per day.

It’s all about getting yourself into a ritual each day, and practicing these organisation tips daily. 

Step 1: Set a plan for your day – 5 minutes

Before you switch on your computer for the day, take a blank piece of paper and write down how you can make this day highly successful. 

What kind of tasks can you accomplish with your day? How can you achieve these productively? Schedule these tasks into your daily plan, and always try to tackle the harder tasks early in your day.

There is a lot to say for deciding when and where you’re going to something.


In a study, drug addicts agreed to write an essay before 5pm on a certain day – out of those who scheduled it into their day, 80% completed it; out of those who didn’t schedule it, none completed it. 

The tip here is that if you want to get something done, decide when and where you’re going to do it. If you can’t, take it off your list.

Step 2: Refocus – 1 minute per hour

Manage your day hour by hour, set an alarm to go off every hour of your work day and each time it goes off take a deep breath.

Look at your list and ask yourself if you spent that hour productively or not.

Then look at your calendar and recommit to the tasks you have planned for the next hour.


Step 3: Review – 5 Minutes

At the end of your work day, review all that you have accomplished. When were you focused? When were you distracted? How can you be more productive tomorrow?

Using this ritual-focused thinking throughout your workday might help you leave work feeling more productive and successful.
