Woolworths Remove Sewing Needles From Shelves

Woolworths has pulled sewing needles from their shelves as the strawberry crisis continues to grip the country.

Woolies made the move on Wednesday as a precautionary measure, Fairfax reported.

"We’ve taken the precautionary step of temporarily removing sewing needles from sale in our stores," a spokeswoman said.

"The safety of our customers is our top priority."

Meanwhile, two youths have allegedly already admitted to contaminating strawberries with needles.

Yahoo7! News reported that that a boy was arrested after admitting to playing a “prank”, while the Daily Mail reported that a 12-year-old schoolgirl has also admitted to placing a needle inside a strawberry.

It’s believed that the girl showed her friends what she had done before a student notified teachers. Police were called in to investigate.

More than 100 reports of tampered fruit are being investigated by police across the country, many of which are thought to be fake or copycat cases.

Coles has said they had not pulled sewing needles from their shelves and there no current plans to do so.
