Sydney, We Have Another Road Toll To Pay From Today

Western Sydney drivers are now being slugged with another toll after the unpopular M4 motorway toll came back into effect overnight.

The distance based toll at it's most expensive will charge motorists $4.56 each way from Church Street in Parramatta to Homebush Bay Drive at Homebush.

The widened M4 is the first stage of the controversial Westconnex, and the government believes drivers will see significant time savings to justify shelling out for the new toll.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said:

"I hope people vote with their cars. We will see how many continue to use the new piece of infrastructure,"

However, the Opposition claims the Liberals are failing the people of Western Sydney.

Opposition Leader Luke Foley said yesterday:

"I'm going to savour my trip on the M4 tonight, because it's the last day until the 2060s you'll be able to travel on it without a big toll,”

The government plans to sell at least 51 percent of the entire $16.8 billion Westconnex project to the private sector.

Mr Foley said until that happens, the government isn't obliged to enforce the tolls.

"What's wrong with allowing people in 18 months’ time to vote at the ballot box about what's fair and what's not fair?" Mr Foley said.

The Premier believes Labor is just "complaining".

"I think they're hypocritical. They didn't build the roads and the rail when they were in government. We are actually providing it for people especially in Western Sydney," Premier Berejiklian said.
