Sydney Opal Fares To Go Up, But Not As Much As We Thought

The State Government has decided to increase Opal fares by 2.2%, despite a recommendation to put them up more.

It'll mean an extra 39 cents a week for the average train, bus or ferry commuter.

The announcement comes despite IPART recommending a 4.2% increase to public transport tickets.

“We don’t support IPART’s recommended average annual increase of 4.2 per cent as we believe it’s more important to put commuters first,” said Transport Minister Andrew Constance.

Some have criticised the move, saying the Government is only trying to win votes ahead of the 2019 election, and prices will eventually have to go up more to cover the shortfall.
