Salim Mehajer Tells Court That Separation Is A ruse
Salim Mehajer has told a Sydney court that his separation from estranged wife Aysha is just a plot to keep her out of the spotlight.
The controversial former Auburn deputy mayor made the claims while under cross-examination at a hearing to modify his bail conditions at Central Local Court on Thursday, surprising even Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecution lawyer Liam Cavell.
"She wants to get out of the media and acts like she is not with me but she is with me," Mehajer said.
"We are not [separated], we are still together, we are talking."
Mehajer also seemed confused when Mr Cavell brought up the temporary apprehended violence order that Aysha has taken out against him.
"You are aware that there is an AVO out against you with regard to Aysha Mehajer?" Mr Cavell asked.
Mehajer replied: "I am not too familiar with the AVOs. All I know is that we do talk and we are still married."
Under the conditions of the AVO, Mehajer is not allowed to contact or approach Aysha, whom he married in a lavish ceremony in 2015.
A decision on whether a permanent AVO should be granted is scheduled for March 2018.
