New Technology To Catch Drivers Texting Behind The Wheel
World-leading technology to detect texting drivers will be trialled in NSW within months as the state government vows to crackdown on drivers doing the wrong thing.
Roads Minister Melinda Pavey wants NSW to have the strongest rules in the country as authorities plead with drivers to put their phones away while driving.
Minister Pavey says "people aren't respecting the rules".
It comes as more than 2000 NSW drivers have been caught texting when behind the wheel since two police officers were critically injured after an alleged repeat offender ploughed into them in Sydney's southwest less than a month ago.
Similar to red light cameras, the technology is able to detect mobile phones that are being used on drivers' laps or even passenger seats.
