Jim Carrey Sued For Girlfriend's Death By Her Husband

A year after Cathriona White's fatal overdose, the make-up artist's estranged husband has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her then-boyfriend, Jim Carrey.

In the court documents, obtained by PEOPLE, Burton alleges that Carrey used his "immense wealth and celebrity status" to illegally obtain the prescription medication that led to the 30-year-old's death.

Furthermore, Burton says, the 54-year-old actor allowed White, who suffered from depression, access to the drugs and tried to cover up his involvement in her tragic passing.

Burton's lawyer, Michael Avenatti, told PEOPLE that they were asking the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office to launch an official investigation into the matter, saying: "We look forward to the facts and evidence relating to Mr Carrey's conduct and role in the death of Ms White coming to light."

The bulk of Burton's claim rests on a text uncovered in the toxicology report, in which Carrey asks White if she knows "where his painkillers went from under his sink"; in the filing, Burton, who, though estranged, was legally married to White at the time of her death, accuses Carrey of sending the "bogus" text in order to "cover-up his conduct and complicity in her death."

The document asks: "If Carrey legitimately believed White had taken the drugs from him and she had subsequently gone missing for days with no contact, then why would Carrey not immediately request law enforcement to check on her well-being after she did not return his text?"

The complaint also alleges that Carrey had an "obsession with controlling and manipulating White" and "had the ability to monitor surveillance cameras on a home White often stayed at and was able, by design, to view the residence remotely to keep track of White's comings and goings."

Furthermore, the filing claims, Carrey "reneged on his offer" to pay for his late girlfriend's funeral.

Cathriona White died by suicide in September of last year, and was found with a note addressed to Carrey; according to a source, the actor is slowly moving on after a "long grieving period."
