Is This The First ’13 Reasons Why’ Copycat Suicide?

In the wake of the success of the TV show executively produced by Selena Gomez surrounding teenage suicide, tragedy has occurred.

When ’13 Reasons Why’ was first released, many felt it ‘glorified’ suicide, and it could be that the copycat suicide of a 23-year-old man has done nothing to quieten those concerns.

A Peruvian man took his life and left behind tapes to those who reportedly drove him to his death, a move similar to the plot surrounding the life of fictional character, Hannah Baker.

Franco Alonso Lazo Medrano, 23, an industrial engineer, committed suicide, according to Peruvian media outlet Diario Clarin.

Peruvian media outlets did not specify the exact timing of Medrano’s death.

Medrano reportedly yelled right before his death: “I can’t stand a heartbreak”.

Peruvian police reportedly discovered two suicide notes; one to a woman named Claudia and a letter of instructions while investigating.

The instructions clearly mapped out who would receive tapes Medrano recorded and stole on the computer, according to reports by local press.

Just like in Hannah Baker’s story, the audio recordings were for the people who reportedly drove Medrano to take his life.

It is not clear if Medrano was inspired by the television show.
