How Michael Phelps Was Beaten By The Kid Who Idolised Him
In 2008, an awkward 14-year-old Joseph Schooling walked up to his idol, Michael Phelps, and asked for a photo.
Little did either of them know, that just eight years later, they’d be competing against each other in Rio.
Yep, 21-year-old Joseph Schooling managed to beat champion Michael Phelps in the 100-metre butterfly in an incredible result.
According to a report on Daily Mail, Schooling was moved to the US for training at age 14. Michael Phelps was Schooling’s hero and inspired him to move to the United States for the extensive training.
He then attended Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida before attending the University of Texas. In 2013, Schooling’s mother, May predicted her son would be a success in Rio, but could never have predicted Friday's result.
'In 2016, he will definitely be a finalist,' she said in 2013.
'Podium… if he gets there, it'll be good, whatever the medal.'
