HACKERS Take Responsibility For Census Website Crashing!

Australia’s census website was shut down after it was attacked by foreign hackers, the Australian Bureau of Statistics have said.

"It was an attack," chief statistician David Kalisch told ABC radio on Wednesday.

"It was quite clear it was malicious."

The ABS is now working with the Australian Signals Directorate to determine the source of the attack but they are finding it very hard to find out where it came from.

In the past, it has been Chinese hackers who have overtaken Australian Government websites.

According to the ABS there were a number of assaults on the census website during the day but they became more frequent during the evening.

At this point they shut down the website.

Kalisch said "I can certainly reassure Australians the data they provided is safe.''

The ABS released a statement around 11.30pm on Tuesday advising the websites was unavailable.

It's reassured Australians they won't be fined for not completing the census on Tuesday.

Mr Kalisch said he expected the site would be back on line around 9am on Wednesday.
