Credit Cards, Phones & Smart Watches Function As Opal Cards

It seems we’ll never have to feel the panic of forgetting to top up our Opal Cards again as it has been announced that Eftpos cards, and payment applications on phones and smart watches can now be used to tap on and off on Sydney public transport.

The new contactless payment scheme will be available from today on the light rail and ferry networks with New South Wales Transport Minister Andrew Constance saying there are hopes it will be rolled out on the train network by the end of the year.

MasterCard was the first to make the tap and go function available to their customers on the Manly Ferry, but this has now expanded to VISA and American Express cards.

“After overwhelmingly positive customer feedback, we’re adding more services, more modes and more card providers,” said Mr Constance.

The new tap and go system has proved popular amongst customers so far, however, the only downside is that credit and debit cards will not have the same benefits and discounts that are available on the various types of Opal Cards.

This technology has been used successfully for a long time in London but Sydney is the first city to introduce it in Australia.

“We are looking forward to rolling out similar solutions in other states and making Australian cities more connected,” said Mastercard’s Division President for Australiasia, Richard Wormald.
