Bad News For Anyone Who Loves The Iconic Sydney Fish Markets

Anyone who lives in Sydney has no doubt visited the iconic Sydney Fish Market.

Located in picturesque Blackwattle Bay in Pyrmont, the market was established in 1945 by the state government and was privatised in 1994.

Interestingly, the Sydney Fish Market is the world’s third largest fish market - and it’s about to get bigger.

For those who love the iconic location, you’re about to be sorely disappointed, as plans to tear the markets down to construct a bigger, more elaborate location.

The iconic Blackwattle Bay site is said to be torn down for apartments and a $250 million version built nearby to double tourist numbers.

The plan includes a new 35,000 square metre fish market with 15,500 square metres of retail space, double the current 6,582, over SEVERAL levels including below the waterline.

More than three MILLION tourists visit the markets every year, but the NSW government are aiming to double this to six million.

There would also be restaurants with outdoor dining space for 3,000 customers, an atrium, a possible rooftop bar, and wharves for fishing boats, according to News Corp.i Construction is set to begin in 2018 with the aim that the project is ready by 2020.

The state government has called for registrations of interest from the ‘world’s best design and engineering experts’ to produce the new markets.
