IKEA Is Thinking Of Opening Stand-Alone Restaurants

A trip to IKEA is made even the more special thanks to the inclusion of its in store cafés. It’s hard to go past the $1 hotdogs or Swedish meatballs.

Now you might not even need to go furniture shopping to get that fix with reports IKEA is thinking about opening a stand alone restaurant.

“We’ve always called the meatballs ‘the best sofa-seller,’” head of food operations Gerd Diewald told Fast Company.

“Because it’s hard to do business with hungry customers. When you feed them, they stay longer, they can talk about their [potential] purchases, and they make a decision without leaving the store. That was the thinking right at the beginning."

IKEA’s food section raked in around $1.8 billion in 2016 showing its big business for the furniture giant.

Interestingly, reports suggest up to 30% of customers only go to IKEA for the food.  firmly believe there is potential. I hope in a few years our customers will be saying, ‘Ikea is a great place to eat—and, by the way, they also sell some furniture.’”

There’s no word yet on when the concept will become a reality.
