The Unexpected Sydney Venue Offering World-Class Dining

When I was told I was being treated to a 5-course bespoke degustation, made by internationally renowned chef, Nick Whitehouse I never would have guessed that I was going for dinner at The Epping Club. Their in-house restaurant, Rawson’s is now home to an unpredictable and incredibly unique culinary experience, The Chef’s Table. I was lucky enough to try it and was absolutely blown away.

The Chef’s Table experience is completely personalised. Head chef, Nick Whitehouse (who has appeared as a guest chef on Masterchef Australia, has worked at Flying Fish and Wildfire as well as 1-2 star Michelin restaurants in Holland, France and the UK) directs your culinary journey, creating the menu off-the-cuff, depending on your likes and dislikes, what you’re in the mood for and basically any guidance you give him. Feel like a seafood feast? He’ll create five crustacean themed courses. More of a meat eater? You’ll be served enough beef to make a paleo green with envy.

I got a taste of just what Nick can come up with. I was served:

Garden pea and coconut soup, Tasmanian oysters with apple foam, Tasmanian salmon with scallop and squid ceviche, Moo vs. Roo: Beef and Kangaroo steak served with Leak, potato and butter puree with a soy caramel sauce and chocolate, orange zest and nutmeg fondant with snickers icecream. All of it was just as mouth watering as it sounds.

The kind of thought that goes into each course is truly impressive. When explaining why he chose apple foam for the oysters, Nick told myself and my guests that typically, citrus fruits are paired with oysters, but that the chemical extracted from apples adds a new and refreshing flavour when paired with oysters while still cutting through the salty taste of the oysters. This kind of attention to detail is what makes the Chef’s table experience so unique.

Aside from the amazing food, each course is paired with a wine that compliments the flavour profiles of the dish perfectly. Nick also explained that the flavour profiles on the tail of each dish will always lead into the next, so that you’re not left with any bitterness on your palette. Like I said, it’s impressive!

So, how much is this kind of experience going to set you back? The Chef’s Table starts at $95 per head for 10 people and if you’re feeling a little adventurous, you can increase the price and number of courses. Whether you’re looking for a Father’s Day gift, a birthday surprise or just a fun night out with your mates, this hidden gem should be top of your list!

If a degustation isn’t your thing or you’re looking for something a little less extravagant, you can grab a seat at Rawson’s restaurant from Wednesday-Sunday for a set lunch or a-la-carte dinner. Or even visit the Brasserie outside at The Epping Club for breakfast, lunch, dinner or nibblies and a few drinks! Rawson’s menu is another brainchild of Chef Whitehouse and is changed seasonally.
