The Other BIG Oscars Stuff-Up No-One’s Talking About

For the 89th Annual Oscars, it just keeps getting worse.

Not only did the wrong film get announced for ‘Best Picture’, but there was another major stuff-up during the annual ‘In Memoriam’ segment, which saw a living person’s photo flash up on the screen in place of someone who had passed.

Australian movie producer Jan Chapman was “devastated” to see her photo mistakenly flashed up on the screen next to the name of her late colleague, Janet Patterson.

During the ‘In Memoriam’ segment, in which people from the film industry who have passed in the last year are remembered, Chapman was shocked to see her own image on the screen.

Patterson, who was nominated for four Oscars throughout her career for her work on The Piano, Portrait of a Lady, Oscar and Lucinda and Bright Star, passed last October.

She was an intensely private woman who preferred to stay behind the scenes of the film industry, so very few photos of her are publicly available.

This could be how the Academy wound up with the wrong photo of her…

The image used was instead Jan Chapman - a 66-year-old Sydney-based producer who is very much alive. Chapman, a close friend of Patterson’s was horrified.

“I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long- time collaborator Janet Patterson,” she said after the ceremony.

“Janet was a great beauty and four-time Oscar nominee and it is very disappointing that the error was not picked up.”
